Waxing and waning slacks: The changing ecohydrology of interdunal wetlands/slacks in a Lake Michigan coastal dune complex during rising Lake Michigan-Huron levels

چکیده

Since 2016 we have studied the largest interdunal wetlands/slack lying within a deflated parabolic dune east of Lake Michigan. Geologic cross-sections show ? 15 m sand and gravel beneath dunes , creating an aquifer hydraulically connecting Michigan-Huron (MH) with water table/shallow groundwater influencing slack. levels risen 1 from to 2020, increasing around slack m. Color-infrared images vegetation quadrat sampling appearing, then significantly expanding main upland/dune transitioning wetland in response this rise. Monitoring well data rise spring as MH rises. Levels drop growing season begins while continues through summer. Short-term level increases occur due local rain events, but significant declines follow evapotranspiration . Slack begin again late summer into fall end arrives, decreases, heavier, more frequent events occur. Together, these factors push their highest point year are decreasing. In fall–winter, concert levels. Climate change effects, increased transpiration higher temperatures, drought, greater variability lake fluctuations, may make it difficult maintain wet conditions for hydrophytic vegetation. Hence, climate poses risks existence imperiled ecosystem.

Recent water level declines in the Lake Michigan-Huron system.

Great Lakes water levels have fluctuated over thousands of years. High water levels were a problem in the 1980s, but a recent sudden drop in Lakes Michigan and Huron has caused particular concern, in part because lower water levels are consistent with many global climate change scenarios. We examined water level data (1860-2006) representing Lakes Michigan and Huron to evaluate changes in both ...

Atmospheric mercury deposition to Lake Michigan during the Lake Michigan Mass Balance Study.

Wet and dry mercury (Hg) deposition were calculated to Lake Michigan using a hybrid receptor modeling framework. The model utilized mercury monitoring data collected during the Lake Michigan Mass Balance Study and the Atmospheric Exchange Over Lakes and Oceans Studytogether with high-resolution over-water meteorological date provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (July,...

The 1998 Coastal Turbidity Plume in Lake Michigan

In this paper, numerical models of coastal circulation, wind-waves, and sediment transport are applied to the March 1998 turbidity plume event in Lake Michigan to investigate the role of wind-induced circulation in the offshore transport of sedimentary material in Lake Michigan. Computer visualization is used to compare model results to the evidence of cross-isobath transport suggested in satel...

The Impact of Chicago on Lake Michigan: Results of the Lake Michigan Mass Balance Study

As part of the U.S. EPA’s Lake Michigan Mass Balance Study, a predictive model for gas-phase persistent organic compounds over Lake Michigan has been constructed. Using air temperature, wind direction and atmospheric PCB concentration collected around and over the lake, the model predicts the concentration of PCB congeners (~100) and trans-nonachlor over the lake and gas exchange fluxes. The mo...
